The IAS exam remains the pinnacle of ambition for countless young Indians, drawing thousands of hopefuls each year. Yet, only a select few manage to pass. Among these rare achievers is Renu Raj, who distinguished herself by securing a coveted IAS position on her very first attempt.
The IAS exam represents the pinnacle of career aspirations for many young Indians, with thousands vying for a chance each year. Yet, only a handful succeed, and even fewer achieve their goal on the first attempt. Renu Raj, an IAS officer, stands out as a remarkable example of this rare success.
Renu Raj’s story is both inspiring and unconventional. Achieving an impressive All India Rank of 2 on her inaugural attempt, she transitioned from a career as a physician to join the IAS. Hailing from Kottayam in Kerala, Raj completed her education locally before pursuing medicine. After earning her MBBS, she chose to shift her focus to the UPSC exam, marking the start of an exceptional journey.
Despite graduating as a doctor, Renu Raj harbored a deep ambition to become an IAS officer. She dedicated extensive hours—six to seven each day—to rigorous study, utilizing NCERT resources to aid her preparation. Her efforts culminated in a remarkable achievement in 2014, when she secured the second rank in the UPSC exam, earning widespread acclaim and bringing honor to her family.
IAS Renu Raj’s primary goal was to maximize her impact on society. She believed that as a physician, she could help between fifty and a hundred patients. However, she saw the civil services as a path to serving a much larger number of people. Raj shared that during her medical career, she dedicated three to six hours daily to studying, maintaining this rigorous schedule for six to seven months. In 2022, Dr. Renu Raj married IAS officer Sriram Venkataraman.
