The current Chief Secretary, Shashi Prakash Goyal, a 1989-batch IAS officer, is in office till January 31, 2027. His tenure places him at the centre of the transition timeline, especially with the state heading into Assembly elections due by early 2027.
Among the senior-most officers in the fray, 1990-batch IAS officer Deepak Kumar is set to retire in October 2026, effectively limiting his prospects. Babulal Meena of the 1991 batch, currently serving as Chairman of the Board of Revenue, remains in consideration within the seniority framework, while Narendra Bhushan (1992 batch), on central deputation, is another name in circulation. Anurag Srivastava is due to retire in June 2027, the same timeline that applies to Veena Kumari Meena of the 1993 batch.
Against this backdrop, the political context becomes crucial. With the 2027 Assembly elections looming, continuity at the top may weigh heavily in decision-making. If the state government opts to grant Goyal a six-month extension, it would push the transition beyond the election cycle.
In such a scenario, the post-June 2027 landscape could significantly alter the field. By then, Alok Kumar, a 1993-batch IAS officer, would emerge as the senior-most eligible officer in the line of succession, positioning him as a strong contender for the Chief Secretary’s post.
