At just 23 years old, Smita Sabharwal achieved what many can only aspire to. In 2000, she became a Telangana cadre IAS officer, securing the fourth rank in the UPSC exam—a success that was rooted in her academic excellence from an early age. Her 12th-grade marksheet has recently gone viral on social media, leaving many in awe of her outstanding scores.

Smita Sabharwal’s journey to success in the civil services exam is a testament to her unwavering determination. Despite not clearing the UPSC on her first attempt, she persevered and not only passed on her second try but also secured an impressive All India Rank (AIR) of 4. At just 23, she became one of India’s youngest IAS officers.

Smita’s career began as a sub-collector in Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh. Over the next decade, she served in various districts, eventually being appointed as the district magistrate of Karimnagar in April 2011. It was here that she launched the pioneering ‘Ammalalana’ project in the healthcare sector, earning her the prestigious Prime Minister’s Excellence Award. Under her leadership, Karimnagar was also recognized with the Best Town Award.

Smita is married to Akun Sabharwal, an IPS officer from the 2001 batch, and the couple has two children, Nanak and Bhuvish.
