Rajeev Verma Appointed as Next Chief Secretary of Delhi

New Delhi, September 28, 2025 — Senior IAS officer Rajeev Verma (1992 batch, AGMUT cadre) has been appointed as the new Chief Secretary of Delhi, following an order issued by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. He will assume charge on October 1, 2025, succeeding Dharmendra (1989 batch), who retires on September 30.

Verma, an IIT alumnus with an MTech degree, is currently serving as Advisor to the Administrator and Chief Secretary of Chandigarh, a post he has held since November 2024. Earlier, he also held the post of Chief Secretary of Puducherry, underlining his extensive experience across Union Territories.

A native of Uttar Pradesh, Verma joined the AGMUT cadre in 1992 after clearing the Civil Services Examination at the age of 25. Over his three-decade career, he has held several key assignments in both state and central administrations, including stints in the Ministries of Defence, Power, and Health & Family Welfare. In Delhi, he previously served as Finance and Revenue Secretary (2018–2022), played a leading role in the Transport Department, and headed the Delhi Transport Corporation.

His appointment to Delhi’s top bureaucratic post comes at a crucial juncture. The Chief Secretary serves as the vital administrative link between the elected government, the Lieutenant Governor, and the bureaucracy. With the Rekha Gupta-led government recently sworn in, Verma will be central to the rollout of new policies and governance priorities.

As winter approaches, one of his immediate challenges will be coordinating measures to curb Delhi’s air pollution, a key electoral promise of the BJP government.

Beyond his professional career, Verma is married to Rachna Verma, and the couple is known for balancing public service with family life.

With his blend of administrative experience, policy expertise, and a reputation for steady leadership, Verma’s elevation signals continuity and stability at the helm of Delhi’s bureaucracy.
