He was later deputed to the Central Bureau of Investigation, where he dealt with cases involving corruption networks and organised crime, including illegal mining syndicates. However, it was his subsequent move to the Intelligence Bureau that proved to be the defining phase of his career.

In the IB, Ravi developed a reputation as a tough and methodical intelligence officer with expertise in counter-insurgency and internal security operations. He worked extensively across conflict zones, including Jammu & Kashmir, the North-East, and Maoist-affected regions. Over the years, he came to be seen as one of the Centreโ€™s key specialists on North-East affairs and insurgent negotiations.

By 2010, Ravi had risen to the position of Special Director of the Intelligence Bureau, one of the most senior posts in Indiaโ€™s internal intelligence apparatus. He retired from service in 2012 after spending decades in the countryโ€™s security establishment.
His retirement, however, marked the beginning of another influential chapter in public life. In 2014, the Narendra Modi government brought him back into the system as Chairman of the Joint Intelligence Committee under the Prime Ministerโ€™s Office. In the same year, he was appointed the Centreโ€™s interlocutor for the Naga peace talks, placing him at the centre of one of Indiaโ€™s most sensitive political and security negotiations.

Ravi played a crucial role in the 2015 Naga Peace Accord with the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (NSCN-IM), a landmark agreement viewed as a major breakthrough in the Centreโ€™s efforts to address the decades-old insurgency in the North-East. In October 2018, he was elevated to the post of Deputy National Security Adviser, working within the national security structure led by NSA Ajit Doval. He remained in the position until July 2019.

Soon afterwards, Ravi entered constitutional office. He was appointed Governor of Nagaland in August 2019 and also briefly held additional charge of Meghalaya. In September 2021, he was transferred as Governor of Tamil Nadu, where his tenure frequently drew national attention amid confrontations with the DMK government over legislative and constitutional matters.

From a Kerala cadre IPS officer to one of the countryโ€™s most influential intelligence figures and eventually the constitutional head of West Bengal, Raviโ€™s career has traversed policing, espionage, counter-insurgency, diplomacy, and governance at the highest levels.
