She studied Economics at Hindu College, University of Delhi, and graduated in 1989 with distinction, securing the second position in the entire university. Two years later, she completed her Master’s degree in Economics from the prestigious Delhi School of Economics, where she again ranked among the top students.

Determined to pursue advanced research, Gupta moved to the United States and enrolled at the University of Maryland. There, she completed another Master’s degree in 1995, graduating at the top of her class with an exceptional GPA of 3.9 out of 4.0. She later earned her PhD in Economics in 1998, with her research receiving recognition through the EXIM Bank award.

Her professional journey soon took her to Washington DC, where she spent nearly eight years at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), working on global economic and financial issues. Over the years, she built a strong international reputation in macroeconomics and public policy.

After returning to India for a brief academic stint at institutions such as the Delhi School of Economics, Gupta joined the World Bank in 2013 as a Senior Economist. She later rose to the position of Lead Economist, handling key assignments related to economic growth, fiscal policy and development.

In 2021, she returned to India once again, this time to head the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), becoming the first woman to lead the country’s premier independent economic policy think tank.
