Iqbal Singh Chahal has been appointed as the Additional Chief Secretary (ACS) of Maharashtra’s Home Department, stepping in after Sujata Saunik’s promotion to Chief Secretary. This move comes at a pivotal moment for the state’s administration, especially as the government and police face heightened scrutiny in the aftermath of the Badlapur unrest and a high-profile school sexual assault case.
Currently serving as Additional Chief Secretary to Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Chahal’s transition to the Home Department is significant given the ongoing political and social challenges in the state. His deep-rooted experience in administration, including his stints as the Collector of Thane and Aurangabad, State Excise Commissioner, and Managing Director of MHADA, positions him well for the role.
Chahal’s leadership was also recognized in 2021 when he received the Newsmakers Achievers Award for his exemplary service. Despite her promotion, Sujata Saunik had retained additional charge of the Home Department until Chahal’s appointment, ensuring continuity in the department’s leadership. A 1989 batch IAS officer, Chahal, previously served as Mumbai’s Municipal Commissioner, a position he held from May 2020 to March 2024, before his removal by the Election Commission during the Lok Sabha elections. Known for his close ties with the ruling Mahayuti government, Chahal is expected to navigate the state’s pressing challenges with seasoned expertise.
