UP Chief Secretary Race Heats Up; Alok Kumar Emerges Frontrunner

The race for the next Chief Secretary of Uttar Pradesh is gathering momentum as the incumbent nears retirement. In the corridors of power, speculation has begun to harden into a clearer shortlist.

Among the names in circulation, Alok Kumar has emerged as the leading contender. Currently serving as Additional Chief Secretary, he handles key economic portfolios, including MSME & Export Promotion and Infrastructure & Industrial Development. He also continues as Chairman of the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA).

His advantage is not just positional. With nearly three years of service remaining, Kumar offers the prospect of continuity—an important consideration in a state managing large-scale infrastructure and investment projects.

An engineer from IIT Delhi with a master’s in public policy, Kumar brings a blend of technical expertise and administrative experience. His stint as a senior adviser at NITI Aayog saw him contribute to policy design in health and development sectors.

At YEIDA, he has overseen the acceleration of key projects, particularly in the Jewar and Greater Noida region. Under his leadership, project clearances and planning processes have moved faster, with a clear focus on attracting investment and generating employment.

As the decision window approaches, Kumar’s profile—combining experience, tenure stability, and proximity to key development initiatives—places him firmly at the centre of the conversation.
