Gunjita Agarwal realized her aspiration of becoming a civil servant by successfully securing AIR 26 in CSE 2022 on her fifth attempt.
The UPSC Civil Services Exam stands out as one of India’s most formidable tests. While a fortunate few may ace it on their initial attempt, many must persist through multiple tries to triumph. Yet, what truly matters is the determination these aspirants exhibit, refusing to relent and persistently pursuing their goal.
In a similar vein is the narrative of Gunjita Agarwal, who, on her fifth endeavor at the UPSC CSE 2022, clinched an impressive AIR-26. This accomplishment not only realized her lifelong ambition of serving in government but also exemplified her unwavering resolve.
Gunjita’s father serves as an assistant engineer at the Employee Selection Board, while her mother manages their home. The youngest among three siblings, Gunjita attributes her achievement primarily to her family, who consistently supported and encouraged her endeavors.
While her peers deliberated on their post-high school paths, Gunjita remained steadfast in her goal to clear the UPSC and become an IAS officer. Consequently, she opted to stay in Bhopal, near her family, to facilitate her preparation.
Upon entering her third year of college, Gunjita commenced her preparations. However, juggling her academic commitments and college responsibilities posed a challenge to her studies. Following her college graduation, she resolved to dedicate her entire focus to UPSC preparation, allotting herself three years to conquer the UPSC CSE.
After being pleasantly surprised by her success in the CS 2022 Prelims, she resolved to continue her studies, having nearly abandoned a long-cherished ambition. It was only after navigating through both the Mains and Interview rounds successfully, culminating in an impressive rank, that her elation knew no bounds.
In her decision to major in sociology, she cited her enduring interest in championing women’s empowerment, combating hunger and poverty, and addressing issues related to the caste system, among other factors.
Reflecting on her experience in mock interviews, Gunjita remarked that the panels often scratch the surface of one’s knowledge. Conversely, UPSC panels demand a comprehensive understanding of one’s surroundings, community, people, and life.
During her preparation, Gunjita encountered discussions surrounding the famous saying “Kahan Raja Bhoj aur Kahan Gangu Teli,” which refers to the stark differences between two monarchs. She also faced a question regarding the feasibility of integrating mixed-gender cricket teams.
As a newly appointed bureaucrat, Gunjita prioritizes addressing regional issues that affect various states and communities, viewing this as a pathway to empower local populations. She particularly emphasizes the intersection of education with the development of women and children, recognizing its potential to significantly contribute to India’s progress.
