She Failed Once, Returned Stronger: How Anu Kumari Cracked UPSC With AIR 2

IAS Anu Kumari. For many UPSC aspirants, her journey remains one of the most inspiring success stories in recent years — not because it was easy, but because it came at a stage in life when most people believed the opportunity had already passed.

Born in Sonipat, Haryana, Anu Kumari came from a middle-class family and pursued academics with determination from an early age. She completed her B.Sc. (Honours) in Physics from Hindu College, Delhi University, before going on to earn an MBA in Finance and Marketing from IMT Nagpur. She later built a successful corporate career, working with companies in the insurance and banking sector.

Marriage and motherhood followed. She moved cities, became a full-time homemaker, and devoted herself to raising her young son. By all accounts, life was stable. Yet somewhere within, she felt there was more she wanted to achieve.

In 2013, she appeared for the UPSC Civil Services Examination for the first time. She did not succeed.

At the time, she was 29 years old, a mother, and preparing without the support systems many aspirants rely upon. There was no major coaching institute, no large study circle, and no institutional backing. Around her, many quietly believed her chance had passed.

But Anu Kumari refused to give up.

She prepared again, this time with even greater discipline and focus. Much of her preparation happened at home — studying late into the night after putting her son to sleep, and waking up before he did to continue reading and writing practice. She relied heavily on self-study and free online resources. Throughout the difficult journey, her husband stood firmly by her side.

In 2017, she cleared the Civil Services Examination with All India Rank 2 — the second highest rank in the country that year.

Her achievement stood out because it broke several stereotypes at once. While many top rankers came through highly structured coaching environments, Anu Kumari succeeded as a homemaker balancing family responsibilities alongside one of the toughest examinations in the country.

When asked later what motivated her to continue after failing once, her answer struck a chord with thousands of aspirants across India.

“I wanted my son to see that you do not stop because you failed once. You stop when you decide to stop. I had not decided to stop,” she said.

Today, Anu Kumari serves in the Kerala cadre of the Indian Administrative Service. She has held important administrative positions, including as Sub-Collector of Thalassery and Director of the Kerala State IT Mission. She is currently serving as the District Collector of Thiruvananthapuram, where she has been associated with several governance and public welfare initiatives.

More than a story about examination success, Anu Kumari’s journey has come to represent persistence, quiet resilience, and the belief that ambition does not have an expiry date.
