IAS Suraj Patel’s Sustainable Vision for Amethi: Transforming Waste Management and Rural Infrastructure
IAS officer Suraj Patel, currently serving as the Chief Development Officer (CDO) of Amethi, has introduced a transformative approach to address plastic waste management and enhance rural infrastructure. Through his innovative leadership, Amethi has operationalized waste management units across its four tehsils to process plastic waste into a sustainable material for road construction. This pioneering initiative aligns environmental conservation with infrastructure development, setting a benchmark for similar regions.
A Pragmatic Solution to Plastic Waste
Under Patel’s guidance, waste management units have been strategically established in Bhausinghpur (Amethi tehsil), Bahadurpur (Tiloi), Mahona Paschim (Musafirkhana), and Sujanpur (Gauriganj). These units process plastic waste, converting it into a reusable form that is mixed with bitumen for road construction. This method, implemented under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), a national rural road development scheme, not only addresses plastic waste but also enhances road quality.
The innovative plastic-bitumen mix consists of eight percent processed plastic, which strengthens the road surface and prevents water accumulation, a significant cause of degradation in conventional bitumen roads. So far, the district has constructed 30 kilometers of roads using this method, spread across Gauriganj, Bahadurpur, and Jagdishpur blocks.
Economic and Environmental Gains
This initiative brings dual benefits: economic savings and environmental sustainability. The cost of road construction has been significantly reduced, with savings of approximately ₹1.5 lakh per kilometer, amounting to ₹45 lakh for the 30 kilometers completed. Beyond financial efficiency, the approach reduces plastic pollution, turning a major environmental challenge into an asset for infrastructure development.
