PATNA: Brajesh Mehrotra of the 1989 batch has been appointed as the new chief secretary of Bihar, replacing Amir Subhani, who belongs to the 1987 batch. Subhani has applied for voluntary retirement from the government job to facilitate his appointment as the chairperson of a state-level commission. A notification issued by the state’s general administration department (GAD) stated that Mehrotra’s appointment as chief secretary will be effective from Monday, March 4.

Government sources revealed that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has given his approval to Subhani’s request for voluntary retirement. Subhani, widely regarded as a principled officer, is likely to assume the position of chairperson at either the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) or the Bihar Electricity Regulatory Commission (BERC). According to an official, both commissions have had vacant chairperson roles for some time.

Furthermore, the state government announced the appointment of a new development commissioner. Chaitanya Prasad, an IAS officer from the 1990 batch and currently serving as Additional Chief Secretary in the water resources department, has been designated as the new development commissioner. He replaces Vivek Kumar Singh from the 1989 batch, who has already been appointed as the chairperson of the Real Estate Regulatory Authority (RERA), Bihar.

Just recently, Vivek also submitted his application for voluntary retirement from the government service to pave the way for his appointment as the chairperson of the RERA. Another notification from the GAD states that Chaitanya’s appointment as the development commissioner will come into effect from Monday. The notification further states, “Chaitanya will also assume the additional responsibilities of the chairman-cum-member of the board of revenue and the additional chief secretary of the water resources department, until further notice.”
