After returning to India for a brief academic stint at institutions such as the Delhi School of Economics, Gupta joined the World Bank in 2013 as a Senior Economist. She later rose to the position of Lead Economist, handling key assignments related to economic growth, fiscal policy and development.
In 2021, she returned to India once again, this time to head the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), becoming the first woman to lead the countryโs premier independent economic policy think tank.
